His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh Visits the Buttermarket
Redruth Revival CIC was delighted to welcome His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh on 22nd April 2026 to the Buttermarket, Redruth’s restored food hall and cultural hub, where he met local businesses, community organisations, and project partners to learn more about the regeneration taking place in the town centre.
Originally dating back to 1825, the Grade II listed Buttermarket has been transformed from a historic meat market into Cornwall’s first food hall, bringing together six independent street food kitchens alongside gallery, retail, and office spaces. During his visit, The Duke met traders, spoke with representatives from Redruth Revival CIC and project funders, and enjoyed a musical performance organised by Lowender celebrating Cornwall’s cultural heritage.
His Royal Highness also met representatives involved in Redruth’s Town of Culture 2028 bid before unveiling a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.
The Buttermarket restoration has been made possible through support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Architectural Heritage Fund, Historic England, and Cornwall Council through the High Street Heritage Action Zone programme. As Redruth Revival CIC’s flagship project, the Buttermarket demonstrates how heritage-led regeneration can support local enterprise, celebrate culture, and bring new life to historic town centres.
A spokesperson for Redruth Revival CIC said:
“We were delighted to welcome His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to the Buttermarket and appreciate his support for our project, which is breathing new life into our historic town centre. His visit was an opportunity to celebrate a decade of voluntary commitment to the project by many people and also to highlight ongoing regeneration projects in Redruth.”
