The Buttermarket Wins Three Major RIBA Awards
Redruth Revival CIC and Architectural Thread have been recognised with three major honours at the 2026 RIBA South West & Wessex Awards for the transformation of the Buttermarket in Redruth.
The project received the RIBA South West & Wessex Award 2026, Project Architect of the Year 2026, and Client of the Year 2026, recognising the Buttermarket as an outstanding example of heritage-led regeneration and community-focused design.
Originally established in 1825, the Grade II-listed Buttermarket has been transformed from a neglected market complex into Cornwall’s first food hall and a vibrant cultural courtyard, home to six independent street food kitchens alongside retail, gallery, office, and community spaces.
Led by Redruth Revival CIC and designed by Architectural Thread, the project has carefully restored one of Redruth’s most significant historic sites while creating a flexible and welcoming space for local businesses, cultural activity, and community events. The RIBA jury described the scheme as an “exemplar of intelligent, community-led regeneration”, praising its design quality and social impact.
The project has been made possible through support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic England, Cornwall Council through the High Street Heritage Action Zone programme, and the Architectural Heritage Fund.
John Ette, Partnerships Team Leader at Historic England, said:
“These RIBA awards rightly recognise the Buttermarket as a superb example of what heritage-led regeneration can achieve. Through the careful repair of its Grade II listed buildings and a clear vision for public use, this once underused site has been transformed into a thriving cultural and social hub.”
